Thanks to everyone who came out to our open house at the Bead Tender.  We gained 4 new members!  Our new banner was proudly displayed!!  See pictures on our social media pages.
We started out the meeting with the bank balance:  $1,335.66
Our polymer clay class was fun.  We learned a lot!
July was the last meeting month to sign up for the Bead Challenge. You can still sign up for this by emailing Emily Satterwhite BEFORE August 15th. The Bead Society Craft Show is in November.  The Performing and Creative Arts Center is tentatively holding an event in November, also.  Once we get confirmation on what the Center is doing, we will contact other local crafters and ask if they want to participate in our craft show.
We introduced our new banner at our last meeting.  And we’re looking to get business cards to include our contact/social media information.
Our next open house will be at the Bead Store in Newport News on Saturday, August 15. We’re also thinking about doing an open house on the Southside.
Who won the bead jar? No surprise, Evelyn Miller! Remember to contribute your beads to the monthly and annual bead jars for an opportunity to gain more beads for your stash.
Please remember we are not doing the members sale in August!!

Beading Bits

Hello to one and all! May’s meeting was an open beading session and potluck. Thank you to those that came in brought in a yummy dish to share with everyone!
We had a guest visit with us at the May meeting. David Flowers was our guest and he was brought in by our member Harold Horten. David is interesting in learning how to do the beaded ornaments. Thanks for bringing in David, Harold!
We talked about getting more interest in BSSV. Fundraisers at farmers’ markets; Fall Folk Life Festival in October; HAM (radio) Festival in Virginia Beach; Mary Immaculate Fall Festival; Poquoson Seaford Festival in October; Treasures of the Earth Gem and Mineral show in Virginia Beach. Have a BSSV table set up to sell our items, and give a percentage back to the BSSV.
Field trips were suggested. Such as, Studio Baboo in Charlottesville. We can rent a van to go and do a class there, or ask them to come here.
For our June 15th meeting, we’ll have open beading. It was suggested we make lanyards for our BSSV membership card holders. Bring your beads and supplies. If you use thread, it is recommended you use 8lb thread.
Our July 20th meeting will be a polymer clay class. The cost of the class will be $35 (cash, check, or credit card). Preconditioned clay, memory wire, use of clay extruders will be provided for this class. Other supplies may be required. RSVP to sales@fauxgotten.com to reserve your space and color choices.
Also in July, the blank bracelets are due, and the final, completed bracelets are due in December.
Panache, in Richmond, has superduos in the long tube for a good price.

In August, we’ll have our member only bead sale.

In September, we will nominate Board members.

October class has us doing RAW.  A bling bracelet.

In November, we’ll hold Board elections.

In December, we’ll have our social, and gift exchange, and completed bracelets. The Treasure’s report remains the same, $1,083.52.

This Month

The planned activity for June’s meeting is making a beaded lanyard for your BSSV badge. It can be done in any fashion that you fancy.
The reason for doing this is so that way you have a representative of your work with you when you volunteer to participate in working show tables. Everyone’s style is different and everyone needs a little handy-dandy way to show off your style or type of work.
Of course, you are more than welcome to work on something else entirely; if making a lanyard is just not an activity you find interesting.
Bring your beads and supplies. If you use thread, it is recommended you use 8 lb thread. Here are some places to visit on the World Wide Web for an idea or two for your lanyard to hold your BSSV badge.:

Last month’s meeting was quite interesting with Kat Allison’s demo of her bead looms and finished pieces. Wonderful examples of mixed media pieces!

Just passing on this information about one of our members’ family; Ann Hurt’s mother is in the hospital with pneumonia. Please keep her in mind with thoughts and prayers, maybe even send something nice. Ann, we hope your mother has a speedy recovery.

Our President, Karen Martin, is teaching Spiral Rope. If you are interested in learning this technique please come to the June 16th meeting.

There will be a Logo Contest. The logo needs to include “BSSV” or “Bead Society of Southeastern Virginia” in the design. The contest will run until the August meeting. Members can submit their logo design by email to Emily Satterwhite.
There is a bead show in Norfolk, November 2 & 3. BSSV will have a table at the show.

Ann Smith, librian, asked that members sign books out. There are some books that were taken out and have not been returned. If you have a BSSV book, please return it at the next meeting.

We now have a new website for members and visitors alike to come and visit on the internet. If anyone has any suggestions, comments, additions, etc. please do not hesitate to speak up about the website.

May’s winner of the monthly bead jar drawing was Nancy Trinkle! Congrats and hope you have found those beads useful!

This month Karen Martin will be teaching Spiral Rope to those members interested in learning how to do this particular technique. Supply list and some tutorials are on page 2 on the emailed newsletter.

The supplies are:

  • One tube of size 8 beads
  • One tube of size 11 beads
  • Thread
  • Needle

This month Kat Allison is visiting us to show us loom work and how we can use a loom for beading or weaving.

Also, we need to discuss the opportunity to volunteer for more beading shows. In the past, it has been the same ladies doing the volunteering. Please volunteer!! Let’s hear your thoughts and comments about being able to commit to volunteering to do more bead/craft shows. This helps spread the word about us to the community!

Loom Beading

When weaving on a loom, the beads are locked in between the warp threads by the weft threads. The most common bead weaving technique requires two passes of the weft thread. First, an entire row of beads is strung on the weft thread. Then the beads are pressed in between the warp threads. The needle is passed back through the beads above the warp threads to lock the beads into place. Heddle looms were popular near the beginning of the 20th century. They allowed weaving of beads by raising every other thread and inserting strung beads in the shed, the space between the lowered and raised threads. There are still a few Heddle Bead Looms being manufactured today. The most difficult part of loom work is finishing off the warp threads.

Although loomed pieces are typically rectangular, it is possible to increase and decrease to produce angular or curvy shapes. Fringe can also be added during weaving or before the piece is removed from the loom.

BSSV Beading Bits

How quickly the winter has changed over to Spring already! Hope everyone has at least enjoyed some of the early blooming flowers and gotten inspired by them.

French beaded flowers are this month’s theme for the meeting. Both, Barbara Gibson and Nancy Quintilone are showing us how to do the French flowers.

Ann Smith has kindly volunteered to take over as librarian for the society. Thank you, Ann Smith!

Emily Satterwhite and Ann Smith have plans of automating the library. Good luck on the project!

Also, Lou Tiller talked about the success of BSSV at the quilt show in February.  She thanked everyone who helped make it a success.

Bead drawing winner for March is Sharon Velazquez-Hubbert.  Congratulations Sharon!

Emily has typed the info from the bio sheets that were returned and will distribute.  If you have not returned your completed bio sheet, please complete one today or return next meeting to Emily.

If you haven’t paid your yearly dues yet they need to be paid to Emily.

BSSV will have a display at  two more bead shows this year; midsummer in June/July (info coming soon) and the Innovative Bead Expo November 2-3, 2013 in Norfolk Va.

Karen asked any members who did not have an email address to let her know and the BSSV Newsletter can be mailed to them.  At the January meeting, Sharon left a bag of beads behind and wondered if anyone has found it.

Kay Bolden a local lamp work artist from Poquoson gave a demo on making glass beads.  She provided helpful information on what is needed to produce lamp work beads.  She talked about glass and the different types of glass that she uses.  She said to be sure not to mix two different types of glass in one bead or it will crack.  Kay also talked about needing a good torch and the importance of safety glasses.  Using “mat” gas burns hotter than gas from a propane tank.  Kay had a selection of her beads for sale.

Coming up at the May 19 meeting, Kat Allison will demonstrate loom work and members will be able to practice using a loom.

A supply of BSSV brochures is available and members were asked to take a supply to leave at bead stores in the area.

Treasurer’s report:

Balance:  $1,935.17

The BSSV yearly donation to Alternatives for use of the room will be paid soon.

This Month

This month Nancy Quintilone and Barbara Gibson are demoing and teaching French beaded flowers this month. Please see the supply list on page 2, if you would like to give them a try.

Nancy will also have kits available for purchase for those that are or will be interested.

Correction to last month’s newsletter: I made the mistake of putting Kat Alison for  April’s meeting. Kat will be May’s meeting, not April. Sorry for the confusion.

 French Beaded Flowers

If you are like most people, you have never seen or heard of a French beaded flower. Don’t worry, through this website you can gain a working knowledge of this beautiful and timeless art.
“French Beaded” Indicates the technique used. The components are made by wrapping beaded wire around a central row of beads. Although any type of bead can be used, the majority of flowers are constructed using 11/0 or 10/0 seed (rocaille) beads. Beaded flowers can be used in every way you use silk or fresh flowers. The only difference is that it will be many, many years before beaded flowers deteriorate. Therefore, they make great inserts in bridal bouquets, bridal headdresses, hair barrettes, napkin rings, corsages, “potted” window plants, 3D pictures and wall hangings. Being made of glass and metal, they give an astounding accent when soldered to stained glass projects. Let your imagination “run away with you”. The uses for beaded flowers are endless.

For more information: http://www.beadedflowerpatterns.com

Supply List

  • Size 11 seed beads (large quantity)
  • 24 gauge wire
  • 26 gauge wire
  • Floral wire – 16 gauge/18 gauge
  • Floral tape – green is suggested but other colors may be used

Wire working tools:

  • Clippers/scissors
  • Round nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Nylon covered jawed pliers

NOTE:  If you have a bead spinner(s) please bring along to the meeting.

I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty.

BSSV Beading Bits

We had a great time at the March meeting.  We repeated the member taught classes from a couple of months ago.  This time it gave members a chance to learn another technique that they did not get to do last time.  We broke into groups to learn the Tila bead wave, DNA, Herringbone and Russian stitches.  It was so much fun!  I decided at the last minute to take a class.  Thank you Georgie for sharing your beads with me!  This is what BSSV is all about.  Coming together, learning and sharing.

For those of you who were not at last months meeting, Sandy made the heartfelt announcement that Tammy Bacot has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia.  This is not going to stop Tammy.  She is still going on with TADA in Williamsburg.  She has the strength , spirit, and determination to fight this.  What she needs from us is positive thoughts and any help you may be able to lend at the store.  We are the group that can do just that for her!  Tammy, BSSV is here to support you!
It was announced that AC Moore store is now in  Newport News on Victoria in the K-Mart shopping plaza.  It is  in the building where Ben Franklin used to be.

What’s Ahead

GET READY!  Kat Allison is going to be here for our April meeting!  It is always a fun time, lots of laughs and craziness.  She will be teaching how to make your own findings including closures, head and eye pins and ear wires!  How cool is that!?!  These pieces can be costly and now we won’t have to buy them anymore!! Feel free to bring light finger foods to share such as chips and chips, cookies etc.  This is a member only function.

Each person will need to bring the following supplies and tools:

Tools:
~Chain nose pliers.  If you have two, bring them to use in each hand.

~Round Nose Pliers
~Flush cutters (Please do not bring small craft type diagonal cutters—they can be very dangerous especially in close quarters)
~Small jeweler’s files

Supplies:

~Copper wire in the following gauges:
5 ft of 18 gauge
 5 feet of 20 gauge
15 feet 22 or 24 gauges.  The wire should be dead soft.  Craft wire is not a good substitute.
~Beads.  Make yourself happy with this, but you should have beads that fit on the sizes of the wire in the list above.

Family Fun Fest on Saturday May 19 in Williamsburg.  Vendor apps have been sent via email.  If you need another one sent, please email me at beadsociety@aol.com

Check out this website for free patterns and ideas, 3dbeading.com

You can scroll through the many patterns they have available, such as herringbone rope pattern, seafoam pattern, two dimensional patterns etc . Expand your mind and your talents.

Welcome New Member: Seanna Jones!  She is also our Bead Jar Winner!

Congrats and Welcome to BSSV!

Next meeting is April 15.

 Don’t forget:

Bring your beads for the bead jar & return your library Books!

December Program

Christmas is right around the corner!  It comes so fast!.  One of the best gifts to give is the gift of handmade. Show off your work to your friends and family.  They will love it. Be extra creative and make your own tags….you can use various color of heavy type paper and cut them into any shape you want; trace out reindeers, trees, or even Santa! Put a single hole punch and string a pretty ribbon to tie!

Annual Potluck
BSSV will have our annual December Social Potluck. BSSV will provide shrimp and soda. So bring that favorite dish to share and lets mingle and have fun!

We will also have our gift exchange, which is optional and  our annual bead jar raffle!  The gift exchange limit is $10 and for the raffle tickets, they are being sold for $1 each or 6 for $5. The raffle for the bead jar is a member only event.

Bracelet Challenge
This the time of year we all wait for.  For all of the BSSV members who participated in the bracelet challenge, it is time to turn them in!  We get to see what amazing work was done by our members.  We have a lot of talented artists among us, so I know those pieces will be worn proudly.

The winner of TADA’s challenge was Nancy Trinkle.  She won a $50 gift card to TADA.  This was another fun challenge we had this past year.

 Mid Atlantic Quilt Show:
February 23-26
We are still looking for volunteers.  If you are interested, contact Joan Geller.  The quilt show is held at the Hampton Convention Center.  We are setting up 4/hr shifts.  During this time you can bring beads to work on, show off some of your pieces and handout brochures.  We hope to recruit a lot of new members to our organization.

New Member:

We have a new member among us, Mary Jane Stark!  Welcome to BSSV, we are glad to have you.

Over the past year I have created a few sites for our members to have access too.  We now have a Twitter account, blog and facebook page.  You can access any of these sites by clicking on the icons above.  These sites have been explained at previous meetings, but feel to ask any questions at anytime.  Most members have a facebook page, that one seems to be the most popular.

Since our website has been down, I went ahead and created a blog that will have all our newsletters on them as well as other information, pictures etc.  You can access that by clicking on the “W” logo above or go to the address here:

https://beadsocietyofvirginia.wordpress.com/#

Be sure to save that link to your favorites!  A blog works just like a website, it is just a site to go to and obtain information.  You can even leave comments on certain posts!   Also, add our email into your contacts.  Our email is beadsociety@aol.com.  Any questions you have regarding meetings, what is coming up or needing a recent newsletter can be sent to that address
