Standard

Thanks to everyone who came out to our open house at the Bead Tender.  We gained 4 new members!  Our new banner was proudly displayed!!  See pictures on our social media pages.
We started out the meeting with the bank balance:  $1,335.66
Our polymer clay class was fun.  We learned a lot!
July was the last meeting month to sign up for the Bead Challenge. You can still sign up for this by emailing Emily Satterwhite BEFORE August 15th. Make sure you are present to claim the items for the Bead Challenge at the meeting on August 16th. Finished challenges are to be finished by the December 20th!
The Bead Society Craft Show is in November.  The Performing and Creative Arts Center is tentatively holding an event in November, also.  Once we get confirmation on what the Center is doing, we will contact other local crafters and ask if they want to participate in our craft show.
We introduced our new banner at our last meeting.  And we’re looking to get business cards to include our contact/social media information.
Our next open house will be at the Bead Store in Newport News on Saturday, August 15. We’re also thinking about doing an open house on the Southside.
Who won the bead jar? No surprise, Evelyn Miller! Remember to contribute your beads to the monthly and annual bead jars for an opportunity to gain more beads for your stash.
Please remember we are not doing the members sale in August!!

This Month

This month Kat Allison is visiting us to show us loom work and how we can use a loom for beading or weaving.

Also, we need to discuss the opportunity to volunteer for more beading shows. In the past, it has been the same ladies doing the volunteering. Please volunteer!! Let’s hear your thoughts and comments about being able to commit to volunteering to do more bead/craft shows. This helps spread the word about us to the community!

Loom Beading

When weaving on a loom, the beads are locked in between the warp threads by the weft threads. The most common bead weaving technique requires two passes of the weft thread. First, an entire row of beads is strung on the weft thread. Then the beads are pressed in between the warp threads. The needle is passed back through the beads above the warp threads to lock the beads into place. Heddle looms were popular near the beginning of the 20th century. They allowed weaving of beads by raising every other thread and inserting strung beads in the shed, the space between the lowered and raised threads. There are still a few Heddle Bead Looms being manufactured today. The most difficult part of loom work is finishing off the warp threads.

Although loomed pieces are typically rectangular, it is possible to increase and decrease to produce angular or curvy shapes. Fringe can also be added during weaving or before the piece is removed from the loom.

BSSV Beading Bits

Happy New Year BSSV.  The December pot luck was a success!  Thank you to all the BSSV members who brought in a dish.

For all of the members who participated in the bracelet blank, they were returned and unveiled at the last meeting.  Everyone was pleased with their finished piece.  For all members who have not participated in this even, you really should think about doing one this year.  Drop your fear and push your limits.  This is how you will grow and learn as an artist!
You may or may not have heard, but Bead Haven will be closing it’s doors in March.  We are sad to see them close, but wish Joanne & her crew all the best.  You will be missed!

Congratulations to our bead jar winner, Emily Satterwhite!  Don’t forget to bring those beads with you for every meeting.  The next winner could be you!!

What’s Ahead

It’s a new year and that means BSSV member dues are due!  Don’t forget to bring your cash or check (made payable to BSSV) to the next meeting.  You don’t want to miss out on exciting classes, knowledge and fun!
We have enough volunteers for our February Quilt show.  We do have an upcoming  spring craft market in Virginia Beach this year, in March 16-18.  We do need volunteers for this event.  Please contact Joan Geller for information.  We have classes scheduled  for this month.  Classes are as follows:

Tammy Bacot  is teaching a bracelet with Tila Beads.  You will need 3mm oval crystals, 15/0 seed beads & two hole slide.  She will  have  beads on hand for anyone needing to purchase.

Barb Claytor  is teaching a flower adornment.  You will need a blank beaded backing. You can make a 2×2 inch piece or a bracelet blank.  Do not use delicas or bead tightly as you will need to go back through the base many times.  Use peyote 2 drop, raw netting or any stitch you can get through.  Bring 3 colors of size 11’s for the flowers.  One for the center, one for the main color and one for the fill.  Green size 11 and 15 seeds for the leaf design.  Also, bring 4-6lb test fireline, size 12 beading needles, beading mat and scissors.

Mary MacElroy will be teaching peyote stitching.  You will need to bring seed beads , beading needle and a mat.

Inspiring places

Each month I like to list a few inspiring places I find on the web, such as blogs, design sites etc.  If you have any sites that you visit often and would like to share; email me at beadsociety@aol.com and I will add it!

Katie’s Beading Blog.  This is  by Katie Hacker.  A new host of Beads, Baubles & Jewels.  She has written many books on beading.  Check out her site here for ideas and links!

Don’t forget the local beads shops that are in the area, such as TADA’s in Glouster, Bead Haven in Hampton, The Bead Goes On in VA Beach,  Beadworkz in Portsmouth,  Beadstore in Newport News just to name a few!

Inspiration is everywhere!
