BSSV November 2013 Newsletter

BSSV Beading Bits

Last month we welcomed Harold as a guest to the meeting. Maybe he’ll make a return appearance as a member.

Also, we have lost our member Joan Geller. Please see page 2 or our Facebook page for details about her memorial service.

There were three different bead shows to attend. Thank you to the volunteers that worked the Innovative Bead Show at the Norfolk Airport Hilton on Nov. 2-3.

Found out that the owner of the On the Rocks booth is willing to give a 10% discount to any bead society members as long as they have their up-to-date bead society membership card. She usually attends the Intergalactic Bead & Gem Shows. Please see page 3 for details.

Anyone interested in entering the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center juried show, May 3 – June 1, 2014, should submit their piece by the December meeting.  An outside judge will be used to select the piece(s) that will be entered.

Janet Jenkins has agreed to be the Show Coordinator/Public Relations person.

Four entries were received for the logo contest, all were submitted by Elnora Welbeck. She also had the winning logo design!

Reminder that the bracelets submitted for the bracelet challenge are due in December.  Also dues for 2014 can be paid starting in December ($24).

Lou and Janet are already looking for volunteers to work the Quilt Festival, see p. 2 for more info.

Karen Martin won the monthly bead jar!

This Month

This month our Rosie Lovelace will be teaching a simple chainmaille earring class for those who are interested in participating.  Kits will be available for purchase, so all members have to bring is themselves and tools!

Tools needed:

¨ Flat nose pliers

¨ Bent nose pliers or another flat nose

¨ Small metal nail file

If you don’t have tools and want to do it too; there maybe a member willing to share tools! Don’t be afraid to ask!

There is sad news to report to all members. Our member, Joan Geller has lost her battle with cancer. She passed away on November 9th at 5pm in the company of family and friends. There will be a Memorial Service for Joan on Saturday, November 16th from 11am to 2pm at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk  739 Yarmouth St, Norfolk, VA 23510 (757) 627-5371. Donations have been asked for instead of flowers. The details of the where to donate  have not been made or given at time of this publication. Please check our Facebook page for updates.

Joan Geller was an interesting woman and will be missed by many.

Beading Bits, Continued

The Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival takes place on Thursday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, Mar. 2, 2014, with a preview evening, Wednesday, Feb. 26. The BSSV has a table in the Craft Guilds section of the Exhibit Hall, and we need to have volunteers to help set up and take down our display. Working this show takes a lot of beaders, and we hope you all find it a fun experience. We will be asking for volunteers starting at the November meeting, so that we can work up a schedule. Please be thinking about when you might like to volunteer a few hours, and about what you might like to loan us for our display. The volunteer time is not terribly difficult: we ask that you bring a project (or two) to work on and pursue your art for a few hours.

Please contact Lou Tiller at or Janet Jenkins at, if you have any questions.
